Greener Every Day

Penrith Building Society are passionate about protecting the environment. We have partnered with Greener Every Day to help offset our new mortgage customers’ carbon footprint.

For every new Penrith Building Society mortgage, we will arrange to plant an oak tree. By planting one oak tree we can offset an output of approximately 0.17 of a ton of carbon emissions per year. This is a good start, but why stop there?

You can calculate your individual carbon footprint through one of the many free online calculators and visit the Greener Every Day website to see how many more trees you need to plant to be carbon neutral. You can even buy them as a gift for someone else and start them on their net carbon neutral journey.

The Greener Every Day initiative is just one of several ways in which the Society is committing to reducing its carbon footprint, as we look to make lasting and meaningful changes to the impact we all have on the environment.

  • Paperless Office

The Society is committed to printing as little as possible. Huge strides have been made in removing the amount of paper used by the savings and mortgages teams. We have made as much of our literature as possible available online and, where possible, issue member updates by email.

These small steps can add up to big changes, and we would encourage you to take a moment to consider how much paper you use, and if there are any paperless changes you can implement.

  • Recycling

The Society recycles as much waste as possible, with recycling bins in our branch and offices. Confidential waste is securely destroyed and recycled. Laptops and mobile phones that are no longer fit for use are reused for parts where possible.

  • Bike to Work Scheme

The impact emissions play in carbon production is well-documented. In an effort to encourage staff to consider alternative methods of travel for their commute, the Society offers a Bike to Work scheme for its employees. This enables staff to spread the cost of a bicycle and accessories over a longer period.

  • Merchandise

The Society deals with mortgage intermediaries all across the UK, to ensure that as many people as possible can take advantage of our fantastic mortgage products. In addition to recycled notepads, we’ve recently been pleased to share sunflower growing pots with our broker partners.

If you’ve picked up one of our pots, we’d love to see how you are getting on with growing your sunflower. Hopefully you’ve been able to cultivate a beautiful flower. Share your pictures on Twitter with the hashtag #PenrithSunflower

  • Energy Performance Certificates

The Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard which came into force in England and Wales on 1 April 2018, applies to private rented residential and non-domestic property and is aimed at encouraging landlords and property owners to improve the energy efficiency of their properties.

With effect from 1st November 2019, the Society has required sight of an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for all mortgage applications.  Generally, the Society will require that the property must achieve a minimum EPC rating of D.
